40x40xAnndee New Year's Update

So, as people begin to talk about New Year's Resolutions and whether they do or do not make them, my thoughts have been turning more and more to my own goal plan.  This year I found myself derailed in March and October with the loss of my Grandma Jean and with Cynthia.  These life-changing events consumed most of the emotional energy I would have put toward goals during those times.  So, where do I stand and where am I going?  Here's the original list with updates:

IN PROCESS:
  • Spend Time in God's Word and Prayer Every Day for the next 10 Years. - This one is officially busted, but rather than give up.  I'm still going to strive for consistency in my daily quiet times.
  • Memorize 3,650 Bible Verses (average of one per day) - I'm about a hundred Verses into this one
  • Read or Declutter All My Books - Major Diversion on this front: I received a Kindle for Christmas
  • Keep a Personal Journal - 520 entries (about once per week) - 4 Entries Down, many to go
  • Pay Off All Debt - This one is adjusted due to the fact that we are having a baby in August and we're switching to mega-savings for the time being.
  • Update Family Website 120 times - This one needs to be reconciled with my other Journaling and Photography Pursuits.
  • Teach Genna 500 Bible Verses - This number fluctuates based on the amount of review we've had recently.
  • Read Four Versions of the Bible (NRSV, NIV, NKJV, The Message)
  • Organize All my Digital Photos - Step by Tiny Little Step
  • by 31 - Completely Declutter my Possessions - I have a lot to do on this one before my birthday!
  • by 31 - Bring Media Projects Up-to-Date - This one is going to take a monumental effort
  • Bring my Italian Back to Conversational Level (working on vocab through flashcards)
YET TO BEGIN:
  • Buy a nice Camera and take a photography class
  • Run a Half-Marathon - This one will have to wait until at least 2011
  • Scrapbook December 2004 to Present (and keep up-to-date)
  • Earn my Masters of Divinity in Missional Leadership
  • Learn to Play the Guitar & Play a song in church
  • Edit All My Family Videos
  • Scan All Pre-Digital Photos
  • by Chris -
  • by Katie - Visit the Holy Land?
  • by Genna -

Some contenders for this year:
Read all our kids books to Genna
Incorporate the FlyLady Babysteps into my Life/Routine
Try 25 New Recipes (maybe 31, since I'll be 31)
Listen to, Rate or Delete, and Organize all 20 days worth of music I have in my iTunes

More to come.  I have a couple of months to think about it.  Until then I'll be Media Creating and Decluttering like crazy!

Practice Makes Progress...

I’ve really been pondering this quote for some time. Rather than “Practice Makes Perfect”

On this goal I have been VERY consistent, but not perfect. I think there have been a day or two that I’ve missed, but on the whole, I’ve been doing well. So, in this case, practice definitely make progress. :)

Interesting Bump in the Road

Well, this goal may not be reached by the due date, but we’ll see. The reason this goal’s date is in jeopardy is that Chris and I have decided to begin Grad School Online. This would begin in March and will probably throw things off since we’ll need to pay as we go for school. I need to run the numbers again, we’ll see…

Yesterday our new kids Bible memory cds came from www.hideandkeep.com. I’m very excited because Genna is excited about them. The melodies with the verses really help her learn verses in such a fun way. Within a couple of days, she is singing along and can even sing one or two songs/verses mostly by herself.

Fitness Evaluation

I had a fitness evaluation yesterday and went in to discuss the result with the trainer. Armed with this information, I need to decide what my overall fitness goals are in addition to/surrounding this goal of running a half marathon. Lots to think about…

Week 3: Workout 1 of Couch to 5K COMPLETED

I was a little intimidated about this week’s workout, but I didn’t walk during the jogging intervals and I’m very proud of myself. I’m on my way to a 5K!

Began Reading the NRSV Today

I have officially begun this goal in earnest today. I’ve been reading my Bible as a part of my Devotions and Prayer Time, but today I started a reading plan in the New Revised Standard Version as a part of this goal. I read Romans 1 & 2. Romans is so rich in instruction and explanation that I can’t wait to memorize it later on.

Chris and I have begun the Couch to 5K Running Program and finished Week 2 last night. We also found the webpages for the Hundred Push Ups Challenge, Two Hundred Sit Ups Challenge, and Two Hundred Squats Challenge and are going to start them this week. :)

Another $653.42 Down

Since April, we’ve paid another $653.42 for a total of $1302.99 since my birthday. :)

31 Down • 3619 To Go

I’m about 30 Verses behind on this goal, but I’ll catch up. :)

I’m still debating how to track this goal. Maybe you have some insight.

My study process is as follows:

I “15” a verse to learn it. (This is where I say a verse 15 times in a row, correctly in order to move on to the next step.)
I put it in my group of study cards in my flash card program. (I use iFlash for the Mac.) I utilize the “interval study” preference. Interval study works on the principle that reviewing learned material in ever-increasing intervals between studying moves the information from short to long term memory. So, if I get it right today, I review it again tomorrow. If I get it right tomorrow, I review it again in 3 days, then again in 5 day, then 7, etc. Getting info wrong on review moves it back in the process. (This is why I use a flash card program on my computer. It keeps track of what needs to be reviewed on a particular day.)

For simplicity of record-keeping, I counting a verse as “learned” when I’ve “15’d” it. Understanding that, near my 40th Birthday, I will quote all 3,650 verses.
